Quite Possibly the Holy Grail of Lip Products …NARS Velvet Lip Pencil

Ever since the popularity of Clinque’s chubby sticks, nearly every premium and drug store brand having been bringing out their own versions. I was not a fan of Clinque’s chubby sticks due to their lack of staying power so I decided to try the next best thing, Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil.

Application: The lip pencil needs to be applied like any other lipstick in several light layers. Apply the lip pencil lightly, and then allow it to dry. After a few minutes dab your lips with a tissue to remove the excess and repeat the process(up to 3 times). This helps to build the colour and longevity of the lip pencil.

Effect on lips: These lip pencils are truly matte; they have no hint of shimmer or glitter. The lip pencils are highly pigmented which give good colour pay off and adds their longevity.

The lip pencil doesn’t feel like a second skin on your lips, it leaves a slightly chalky texture. This isn’t uncomfortable, but it does leave a slightly snagging sensation on your lips after a few hours. Although NARS claims that the lip pencils are moisturising, as with most long lasting lipsticks, repeated use can be drying on your lips.

Consistency: Surprisingly, the lip pencil has a really creamy texture which helps it to settle onto your lips. This makes it really easy to apply and control.

Longevity: Lipsticks don’t generally last on my lips for longer than 2-3 hours. But, the Nars velvet matte lip pencil lasts me a good 6 hours. The colour will last you through your morning teas, lunch and may just about make it through dinner.

The lip pencils leave limited amount transfer, wear quite evenly and don’t flake/feather (due to its creamy consistency).

Colours: Nars have 13 shades available in their velvet lip pencils. Personally, I don’t think there is a great selection of wearable colours in the shades available. It is a good idea to do swatch of the colours on the back of your hand, as the shade colours can be slightly deceiving.

Uses: What I really love about the NARS lip pencils is that they are so versatile. You can wear them on their own as a lipstick, you can use them as a lip liner or you can use it as a base for any other lip products to make them last longer.

Packaging: The chubby stick design of the pencil makes it easier to apply on the go, without having to worry too much about smudging. Like all NARS products the lip pencils have a sleek and sophisticated black design.

Price: £17.50 per lip pencil, which is in line with other premium brand lip products.

Overall: I think the longevity and colour pay off of Nars Velvet Lip Pencils is worth the price tag.
